Network Troubleshooting For Linux

  • Networking:

    • Ping

    • traceroute

    • ifconfig [network adpt] down/up

      • ifconfig should show you the available network interfaces

    • cd to /proc cat xxx

    • Can you ping or log into your router?

    • Can you ping or log into your Modem?

    • Reset modem then reset Router

    • openspeedtest.org

      • speedtest-cli

  • Hardware:

    • Not posting

      • Memory

      • Other system hardware

        • BIOS setting

        • cable not plugged in to HD/SSD

    • Not booting

      • Hard drive

      • OS

    • cat /proc xxx

    • system info

    • Memory check

    • Disks

    • Cant find [device]

      • lspci

    • Video

      • monitor(s) connected

      • Monitors(s) settings?

      • Upgrade / downgrade video drivers

    • Other Device?

    • Log files

      • / var / log holds log files

      • may vary depending on distribution

      • May have a small app that will read them for you

  • USB devices

    • lsusb

    • lspci

    • may show up on /dev/ttyUSB0 ..

    • Open File manager and look at computer right click and select mount

  • Software:

    • Not starting, Locking up or Crashing?

    • Other errors

    • Log

      • usually found in / var / logs

    • configuration files

    • Incompatible with current OS

    • Bad Hardware or Not connected?

    • Cant install?

      • Was the software from the distro repository or external?

      • Did you compile or just install through package manager

      • Dependencies met?

      • 32Bit OS and 64Bit software?

    • What changed? Kernal update? New driver?

  • SystemRescueCD (more advanced)

    • Hiren’s Boot CD

    • The Ultimate Boot CD

  • Internet search

  • Distro’s forums

  • Software forums

  • Manufact. Forums
